Signal lights
- Use signal lights before you:
- Stop (brake lights)
- Slow suddenly (brake lights)
- Turn (indicators)
- Change lanes (indicators)
- Move to the left or right in the road (indicators).
- Signal in good time (about 5 seconds before in the case of indicators).
- Increase this time on freeways or when you are travelling at high speed.
- Make sure your signals can be clearly seen.
- Make sure your signals are cancelled after the manoeuvre.
Hand signals
- Use hand signals if your signal lights aren't working.
- The following hand signals are used:
- Stop/sudden slow down: put your right arm straight out from the shoulder, then bend it up at the elbow, your palm facing forward.
- Slow down: put your right arm straight out from the shoulder, palm facing forward, then move your arm up and down from the shoulder.
- Left turn: put your right arm straight out from the shoulder, then bend it down at the elbow, and move your hand in anti-clockwise circles (cyclists and drivers of tractors and animal drawn vehicles can put their left arms straight out from the shoulder).
- Right turn: put your right arm straight out from the shoulder, palm facing forward.
- Overtake (you're signaling someone else to overtake you): put your right arm straight out from the shoulder, palm facing forward, then move your arm backwards and forwards from the shoulder.
- Signal in good time (about 5 seconds before you do the action you are signaling).
- Make sure your signals can be clearly seen from the front, back and sides.
- If you are towing, use hand signals to signal direction, because your indicators are being used as emergency warning signals.
- If your signal lights aren't working, don't go on a freeway. No hand signals are allowed except in an emergency.
Emergency stop
- If you have to do an emergency stop don't signal. Keep both hands on the wheel.
